April 17, 2006

The April meeting of the Sault Area Garden Club was held on April 17th , 2006 at the St. James Church with 24 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Kate Marshall. Before the guest speakers, Bev and John Slayter began their program, Bonnie Skoryanc briefly discussed two items : the requirements for articles for The Evening News and information on the new bill on landfill expansion in Michigan. She invited all to attend a rally on April 18th .

Bev and John Slayter gave a presentation entitled “Trials, Tribulations, and Triumphs”, regarding their development of their greenhouse. Their very infomative program included lots of practical hints, including resources and lots of great pictures. They also answered many questions from club members.

A business meeting was held following the program. The minutes of the March meeting were read and motions were made by Paula Jaroz and Bev Youngs for approval. Minutes were approved. Kate reported that Ruth Clark indicated the treasury balance was $1,260.69.

Kate reported that we have five new members: Julie Bauman, Phyllis Bigelow, Michelle Gerig, Emily Grenfell, and Kristen McDonald.

“Flowering bulbs” were the topic of show and tell this month. We saw samples of : “Glory of the Snow”,“ Puskinia”, “Double Snow Drops”, “Siberian Squill” , “Heleboris” and “ Daffodils” thanks to Connie Mattson, Cheryl Shaul, Dorothy Dansdill, Paula Jaroz, and Bev Youngs. Next month we will feature May baskets.

Two members had raffle tickets to sell to benefit Bay Cliff and American Red Cross.

Carol Askwith indicated the Sault Locks’ gardens are ready for cleanup. This year work sessions will be held on Thursdays at 10:00 am. She also reported that the May club meeting will start at 7:00 pm at the Sault Locks Visitors Center. The plan is to dress in work clothes, bring tools, gloves etc. to participate in a demonstration of separating and moving plants that need to be divided. Members who don't want to participate, but watch instead are still encouraged to come. We'll meet rain or shine. Even if the weather isn't suitable to work, from under their umbrellas our members can still take a look at all the spring bulbs that are flowering. Diane McDonald will make phone calls to members not in attendance to remind them of the location.

Kate talked about a spring wildflower tour to be conducted by Pat Wilson. The group decided on the date of June 3rd . We will meet at the church at 9am and tour the Gerstacker Nature Preserve, Albany Creek and possibly Creekside Nursery.

Members were reminded that we needed member gardens to tour in July.

Dorothy Dansdill reminded members of the St. James Spring Garden Tea scheduled for Saturday 22nd at the church.

Raffle items were provided by Gayle Johnson, Dorothy Rich and Ruth Molino. Jeanne Cooper, Margo Sabourin, and Bonnie Payment provided refreshments.

The meeting adjourned at 9:08.
