Minutes

January 16, 2006

The January meeting of the Sault Area Garden Club was held on January 16, 2005 at the St. James Church with 29 members present. The meeting was called to order by President Kate Marshall and the minutes of the November meeting were read. Motion was made by Dorothy Dansdill to approve the minutes, seconded by Bonnie Skoyanc. Joan Clark gave the Treasurer’s report. The December balance was $1, 162.95. Disbursements and dues payments brought the January balance to $1,131.20. Motion to approve was made by Bonnie Skoranc, seconded by Bev Youngs.

Linda Beaumont asked everyone to let her know if there were corrections to the membership list. Jeanne Cooper’s e-mail should be Coopers123@charter.net. New members will be put on a separate third page and handed out at a future meeting.

Bonnie Skoranc gave a report on the library and handed out a list of the books, video and computer program available. Members were asked to check if they had previously borrowed the video on Hostas, as that hasn’t been found. All donations are welcome and a wish list will be compiled so we can add to the library as needed. The soil tester will also be added to the library box so that can be checked out with a card reference.

Show and Tell was an enjoyable discussion on favorite houseplants. Linda Stoetzer-Carrick brought in pictures and told about growing tomatoes and cucumbers in the house during the winter. She plants new seeds at the end of summer, brings the young plants into her home before frost and gives them supplemental light, a warn south window, and is able to harvest tomatoes and cucumbers during the winter. Marcy Misner brought in her large Night Blooming Cereus plant and several members were familiar with it and how to care for it. Linda Sumner has one that is about 50 years old and blooms reliably every year. Cheryl Shaul told about her Boston Fern that she’s had since 1974 and that at one time she’d had to use an axe to divide it. Susan harries told about a red Cyclamen she’s had for about 5 or 6 years that blooms for 9 months and then takes a rest. Dorothy Dansdill showed a hairy begonia leaf that is one of her favorite houseplants and explained how to do leaf propagation. Ruth Molino told about a white Christmas Cactus that had been her mother’s and was maybe 40 years old and how it survived an automobile crash and being drenched with wine. Diane McDonald brought in leaves from a geranium she is trying to overwinter in the house. The edges were turning brown and dying out. Lots of discussion on the cause and suggestions to water at the bottom, don’t use city water, drench it throughly to wash out accumulated salts in the soil and cut it back. Guest Bonnie Campeau said she was new to the area and had brought with her a new plant called a Goldfish plant. She asked if anyone had one, but no one present was familiar with it.

Kate mentioned that someone had asked her about the logo items and she said she had talked to Superior Impressions and they had our logo on file and anyone could go in and have items printed as they wished.

Susan Harries brought in an article from the National Center for Genetic Resources and the national seed storage laboratory which will be put into our library.
Bonnie Skoryanc talked about our website and that we get an average about 60 visitors every month. There are pictures on the site of our field trip to Adcock Gardens, the trough workshop, and the links from the November meeting on rain gardens as well as lots of other information. Members are encouraged to send her pictures and she will put them on our web page.

The February meeting will be a presentation on plants used in therapeutic aromatherapy by Terri Tavenner and Charla Gordon from Sugar Island Secrets, makers of lotions, oils and bath salts.

Refreshments were served by Bonnie Skoryanc and Bev Youngs. The raffle items were donated by Joan Clark, Susan Harries and Margo Sabourin.

The program was a video on Plants that Purify the Air by Ed Hume, which will be added to the library.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00.

Acting Secretary
Bev Youngs
